Hey Trader Joe, Why You Waste’n Food?

Trader Joe’s prides itself on being popular — because it is. “Your neighborhood grocery store” has hundreds of stores around the country. Hip, cool stores with a great selection of organic foods and employees who wear cheerful Hawaiian shirts.

But Trader Joe’s isn’t actually doing all it can to be a good neighbor. There’s one thing Trader Joe’s refuses do for its customers and their communities: stop wasting food.

Every night, Trader Joe’s throws away healthy, edible food rather than donate it to homeless shelters and food pantries, contributing to a huge, nationwide problem with food waste — a 96-billion-pounds-per-year problem.

That’s why Jeremy Seifert, maker of the award-winning documentary “Dive!” about food waste, started a Change.org petition to call on Trader Joe’s CEO Dan Bane, VP of Marketing Matt Sloan, and public relations director Allison Mochizuki to address their company food waste policy.

In scenes from “Dive!” Jeremy shows Trader Joe’s dumpsters full of food — a dozen eggs thrown away because one was cracked, a crate of bananas tossed because of a few brown spots, intact packages of fresh spinach stacked in the trash — and says, “it’s about more than not wasting food. It’s about making sure everyone has enough to eat.”

Pushing progressive grocery chains like Trader Joe’s to institute company-wide zero-waste policies is the first step toward cutting into food waste overall.

By adding your name to his Change.org petition, you’re helping Jeremy get Trader Joe’s attention — and taking a step toward what he describes as “a world of empty dumpsters, good food in full bellies, and regular people leading sustainable lives”:

Peru Approves 10 Year Ban On GM Crops, Brazil Speeds Up Approvals

Bolivia is the main land standing between Peru and a Roundup-Ready Paraguay. Despite South American territories jumping on the GM crop bandwagon, Peru has issued a 10-year moratorium on all GM planting in an effort to preserve their biodiversity. This temporary ban includes prevention of GMO imports, cultivation, breeding and production.

Some UN legislators opposed the ban, concluding that GM food is already consumed and can cover food needs better as the sales are greater than organic. Meanwhile, Brazil’s vote to approve commercial application of a GM bean variety is expected shortly. Without much testing or proof of crop worth, the idea is to speed up evaluations and approvals, in an attempt to resist golden mosaic virus.

A couple weeks ago, HFA reported on the deaths and sickness resulting from the vast unhindered spraying in Paraguay and other parts of South America. With soy becoming a lucrative “green gold” crop and apparent economy booster, it’s a relief to see Peru taking a stand.

SUMMARY: “The Plenary Session of the Congress, approved the opinion of the law project that declares a moratorium of ten years that prevents the import of Genetically Modified Organisms on the national territory for cultivation, breeding or of any transgenic production.”

Lima, jun. 07 (ANDINA). The Plenary Session of the Congress, approved the opinion of the law project that declares a moratorium of ten years that prevents the import of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) on the national territory for cultivation, breeding or of any transgenic production. It was sustained by the president of the Agrarian Commission, Aníbal Huerta (PAP), who declared that in the face of the danger that can arise from the use of the biotechnology a moratorium must be approved to take care of our biodiversity. It received the endorsement of congressmen Elizabeth Leon (BPCD), Franklin Sanchez (PAP), Mauritius Mulder (PAP), Oswaldo Luizar (BPCD), Jorge of Castillo (PAP), Oswaldo de la Cruz (GPF), Luis Wilson (PAP), Yonhy Lescano (AP), Aldo Estrada (UPP), Hilda Guevara (PAP), Gloria Branches (BPDC) and Maria Sumire (GPN). From different viewpoints, they agreed in the defense of the national biodiversity due to our greater climatic diversity, but they differed with regard to the moratorium. Congressman Alejandro Rebaza (PAP), made some precisions to the opinion and, like the colleagues Sanchez and Estrada, proposed a technical commission of prevention and investigation that issues a report in two years. The legislators Raul Castro (UN) and Juan Carlos Eguren (UN) expressed themselves against the moratorium, because they considered that already we consumed transgenic products and that the doors to biotechnology could not be closed because the transgenic production, that is necessary for covering the food needs, has 70% more sale than the organic production. The parliamentarian José Saldaña (AN) remembered that the biologists have asked to file the project in debate because already exists a law on the matter, whereas legislator Yaneth Cajahuanca (GPN) suggested to leave the project for the next session. On the other hand, congressmen Luis Giampietri (PAP) and Édgard Núñez (PAP) said that it is not possible to close the doors to science and that it is possible to decided on a prudential moratorium of five years. Finally, the president of the Commission of Andean Towns, Washington Zeballos (BPCD), informed on the modifications to the opinion and that the term of the moratorium would have to be of ten years. The proposal was approved by 56 votes to favor, zero against and two abstentions and exonerated from second voting by 50 votes to favor, four against and three abstentions. The approved norm establishes a moratorium of ten years, determines as competent authority of the subject to the Ministry of the Environemnt and creates a Technical Commission of Evaluation and Prevention of Risks of Use of GMOs, that in two years will have to issue a report on the subject.

2.Brazilian commission changes its internal statutes to speed up approval of GM crops and hasten the release of modified beans
Update from the GM-Free Brazil Campaign
Brazil | Rio de Janeiro | June 07 2011

On May 17th a public hearing was held in Brasilia to discuss an application for commercial release of the first genetically modified bean variety. Beans are part of Brazil’s staple diet, consumed daily by most of the population. The new variety was developed by Embrapa (the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) for resistance to the golden mosaic virus and is already just waiting for commercial authorization from CTNBio (National Biosafety Technical Commission, the official body responsible for evaluating and authorizing GM crops).

The hearing was held at the head offices of Embrapa itself, the state company making the application. This unprecedented event raised the prospect of CTNBio adopting the procedure of ‘consulting society’ at the premises of all applicant companies, with, who knows, the next hearing being held at Monsanto’s head office. The president of CTNBio, Edilson Paiva, claimed they had been unable to find another auditorium available in Brasilia, hence the choice.

The representative for the NGO Terra de Direitos questioned the confidentiality granted to various sections of Embrapa’s report. CTNBio withheld more information than the areas requested by the company, a fact likely to hinder monitoring of the product’s impacts after its commercial release. In this case access to all the data was denied even to the member of the Commission responsible for reporting on the evaluation process.

Field studies were undertaken in just three localities over a two-year period. Interpreted generously this mean that the environmental impacts of the technology were tested in two biomes at most. Brazil’s legislation requires studies to be undertaken in all biomes where the modified plant might be grown. As the Terra de Direitos representative pointed out, Embrapa is applying for unrestricted release of the new GM bean variety throughout the country, despite the lack of adequate data.

AS-PTA’s representative also questioned the absence of data on the potential impacts of genetic modification on the common bean varieties already consumed in Brazil. All the tests were carried out on a single type of bean, rather than those consumed in the country on a daily basis. At the same time, various parts of Embrapa’s report themselves state that the test results vary according to the type of bean receiving the transgene. Despite these tests not being conducted, the application is for release of the GM variety for subsequent incorporation into other bean plants.

Even more revealingly, only two of the 22 transgenic events generated for resistance to the mosaic virus actually worked. As the evaluation report states, it remains unknown why these produced the expected results while the other 20 events did not. Indeed the report concludes that more studies are needed to understand the transgene in question. In other words, when in doubt, release it. This abandonment of the Precautionary Principle was highlighted at the hearing by AS-PTA.

The representative from CONSEA (the National Nutritional and Food Security Council) stressed that the human right to healthy and adequate food will be achieved through agroecology, not through the development of GM seeds. He cited experiments run by Embrapa over an eight-year period that showed considerable success in controlling the bean plant mosaic virus through organic farming methods and without any loss of productivity.

CTNBio approves changes to rules to speed up commercial releases

The day after the public hearing on the GM bean application, the monthly meeting of CTNBio also began in Brasilia. Opening the plenary session, the Secretary of Research and Development Policies and Programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Carlos Nobre, emphasized the importance of the Commission’s work and the need for risk evaluation to be based on the Precautionary Principle, much to the incredulity of many of those listening to him. As soon as the Secretary left the plenary session, the president of CTNBio announced that the vote would be taken on changing the body’s statutes. But after hearing the first question, he immediately announced that the process would be sped up to avoid the ‘obstruction principle.’

The regulations were set to be altered at the meeting following a court ruling that obliged CTNBio to introduce more transparent procedures and allow access to the information received for evaluation, except for data covered confidential business information.

The members of the Commission used the chance to alter the statutes to approve changes to the ritual of the evaluation process. They shortened the evaluation periods, meaning that GMOs releases will be even quicker in practice, reinforcing CTNBio’s image as a rubber-stamping institution that has so far never refused a request for commercial release.

The vote to approve the release of GM beans is set to take place shortly.

Germany’s Superbug Weaponized With Black Plague DNA

Some alternative health news sites have been leery about posting Germany’s E. Coli outbreak as anything but an unfortunate event probably caused by the overuse of antibiotics and unsanitary factory farm conditions. That is, until evidence of a more nefarious nature emerged.

Recently, Health Ranger, Mike Adams broke news with telling evidence showing that the only plausible way this strain could be resistant to eight classes of antibiotics at the same time was through systematic manipulation. All these drugs are not used in agriculture, nor would the bacteria encounter them naturally.

But wait – it gets worse. A leading German E. coli researcher has discovered that this particular bacteria contains DNA sequences from the Bubonic Plague!

Also noteworthy, but under the radar, is that Japan experienced a similar outbreak (but with E. coli O111) resulting in two deaths as of May 11.

There are some strange and coincidental things to consider. Germany (so far anti-GMO) experienced the European Union herbal remedy ban just a couple weeks before the outbreak was detected. How on earth does historical Bubonic Plague DNA get mixed up randomly with an E. coli bacterium? And why was one of the only real cures for these victims banned in the EU January 1st of this year?

~Health Freedoms

Germany’s superbug is weaponized with Bubonic Plague DNA

Food Freedom has deliberately refrained from posting any suggestion that Germany’s superbug is related to biowarfare, until further evidence emerged. Various sources now corroborate this story, including The Atlantic:

“On Tuesday [May 31], the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitungreported that [leading German E. coli researcher Helge] Karch had discovered that the O104:H4 bacteria responsible for the current outbreak is a so-called chimera that contains genetic materia from various E. coli bacteria. It also contains DNA sequences from plague bacteria, which makes it particularly pathogenic.”

Though he emphasized “There is no risk, however, that it could cause a form of plague,” Karch added that plague DNA sequences make the superbug “particularly pathogenic.”

Also, it is interesting timing to note that the European Union banned herbal remedies on May 1, 2011. Below is Dr Rima Laibow’s summary of this developing story.

~ Ed.

By Dr Rima Laibow
Natural Solutions Foundation

They tell us the “Super bug E. coli 0104:H” is terrorizing Germany, causing otherwise healthy people to develop Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in which their kidneys fail, their red blood cells explode and then, tragically, they die.

Germ sleuths and clinicians alike have been even more horrified than the average Spanish cucumber eater (the vegetable pinned with the blame for the lethal outbreak). The general public just wants the disaster to go away. The doctors want to know why, what and, now, WHO is responsible.

E. coli is found in the guts of every mammal and is generally harmless. In fact, it is present in massive quantities: half of the volume of the normal bowel excretion is made up of their huge numbers. But when a good germ goes wrong, it can cause disease in the host or anyone who picks it up through contamination or lack of hygiene.

And E. coli 0104:H4 has gone very, very wrong, with, it would appear, quite a bit of help from its friends.

Mike Adams, the intrepid Health Ranger, revealed to the English speaking world that this extraordinarily aggressive E. coli (from a family of bugs which are normally passive and non-aggressive in the extreme) had been systematically genetically altered through laboratory manipulation, to be totally resistant to 8 classes of antibiotics.

Natural News Article Link:http://www.naturalnews.com/032623_ecoli_fresh_vegetables.html

“European health authorities are leaping at the opportunity to spread fear about organic foods while ignoring the obvious true cause of the contamination in the first place — the widespread abuse of antibiotics in animal farming operations… The e.coli blame game has become a circus of musical chairs. First, they blamed the Spaniards as a form of retaliation for Spain’s resistance to accepting GMOs. This act drove Spanish farmers into bankruptcy through a savage campaign of rumor-mongering. After ravaging the Spanish vegetable farmers, they began to randomly instill widespread fear about a variety of vegetables: First it was cucumbers, then lettuce and then finally tomatoes. And now, the blame has come full circle and is now being cast upon organic sprout growers in Germany!”

He pointed out, quite correctly, that without sustained and careful laboratory manipulation there would be no way for this organism to acquire total resistance to these drugs since the drugs are not used in agriculture and the bacteria would not encounter all eight of them in nature.

The only reasonable conclusion is that colonies of normal E. coli had been intentionally, systematically exposed to each of the antibiotics in turn and the surviving colonies had been propagated and then exposed to the next antibiotic. The surviving germs were now resistant to both of the antibiotics to which they had been exposed. The process was repeated until a super bug was created which would not yield to any of the antibiotics that doctors would customarily use to treat the infection.

This is the only rational conclusion to which the evidence points.

Of course, by who, and why, the altered organism was deployed has not yet been established. A psychotic graduate student with aspirations to be a mass murderer? A corporate ploy to discredit independent agriculture and force the total industrialization of food to keep it “safe” from contamination (that is, the organized intentional contamination of all food by the folks who make the agrochemicals and GMOs which allow more of them to poison us and the drugs that you take when you get sick from the food)? A dedicated globalist loyally pursuing the “great culling” of us “useless eaters”?

So what we knew was that a forced natural selection had been used to create killer super-super bugs. Now we know that genetic manipulation of the GMO sort has been used, as well. Truly, a weaponized bug if there ever was one…

Helge Karch, the director of the Robert Koch Institute (Germany’s CDC). who heads a consulting laboratory at the Münster University Hospital in Germany says that he has discovered that the super killer contains DNA from E. coli, which is what he expected. It also contains (unexpectedly for those who don’t expect such genocidal manipulations) DNA from the organism that causes plague, responsible for wiping out a quarter of Europe’s population during the Black Death (1348-1351).

Please pay attention here: we are talking about the Black Death. Seriously.

Bubonic plague is caused by Yersinia pestis and is one of the most feared of all disorders. So when Dr. Karch blithely assured the German population that there is little danger of an outbreak of plague from this organism, he is clearly whistling through his Spanish cucumber.

Although we all love to be reassured, there is no one on planet Earth who can reassure us that we are not already facing a new plague. This one, however, rather than resulting from an unplanned, but wildly toxic combination of rats, lice and history, would be the intentional outcome of an unnatural selection process and a high-tech genetic manipulation to create a death bug. A weaponized bug.

Deny the genocidal agenda at your peril. I, for one, can see no reasonable option to the conclusion that the mad [wo]men at the helm of the realm are consummate murderers, killing randomly for their own unspeakable ends.

A bright note, however: there is no way in which any organism can become resistant to nano silver. None. Faced with the presence of a plague, a weaponized super plague, an ordinary infection or a genocidal assault through organisms of death, I want nano silver on hand, lots of it. Nano-silver is a nutrient that supports normal immune system function.

Ah, yes, nano silver was declared illegal in Europe on January 1, 2011. Can’t use an illegal substance, now can we. The good people of Europe are expected to be good citizens of the New World Order and… just die.

Civil disobedience, anyone? Or perhaps the people are ready to fight for their silver!

I get mine, which is called “Silver Sol” at www.Nutronix.com/NaturalSolutions. You should, too.

Yours in health and freedom,

PLU Codes Don’t Really Indicate GM Products – BIG STORY

Anything starting with 4 could be GMO still… PLU doesn’t really mean a thing besides our Organic labels!

—-

HFA considered posting one of those produce 5-digit PLU code guides that reportedly told shoppers whether a food was a GMO or not. Trouble is, have you ever seen the beginning “8,” the supposed GM red flag? This article explains why.

Jeffrey Smith has checked main sources for these PLU codes and doesn’t want consumers to waste any more time squinting at veggie stickers. PLU codes were never meant to communicate to shoppers, but to retailers for other purposes like inventory. A beginning 9, will label organic produce, but the GM 8 never really circulated. It’s not surprising since most informed buyers would avoid them. Seed companies hide the GM seed origins from planters.

There are buyer’s guide links towards the end, and Health Freedoms will bring more news about how to live GM free and take action, in response to many of our readers’ concerns.
~Health Freedoms
Let’s put a rumor to rest. No, the 5-digit PLU codes on produce do not tell you what is genetically modified or natural. This urban legend has circulated long enough, even on the best of websites. It’s time to take it down.
The 4-digit PLU codes on the sometimes-pain-in-the-neck labels glued to apples, for example, tell the checkout lady which is a small Fuji (4129) and which is a Honeycrisp (3283). She’ll know what to charge you and the inventory elves will know what’s what. If there’s a 5-digit code starting with 9, then it’s organic.
These numbers, organized by the Produce Marketing Association, have nothing to do with you. According to Kathy Means, Association Vice President of Public Relations and Government Affairs, this is an optional convention for retailers and their supplier and is not designed as a communication tool for customers. If you want to know which items are organic, look for the word Organic; and stop squinting at tiny codes.
GMO codes are hypothetical
Those that run PLU-universe figured that someday some retailer might want to distinguish between a GMO and a non-GMO for price or inventory purposes. So they created a convention of 5 digits starting with an 8, just in case it catches on. But it hasn’t. No one uses that number 8 as far as we can tell. And why would they? Most Americans say they would avoid GMOs if they were labeled.
Some seed companies don’t even want gardeners to know which seed is genetically modified. One company that sells zucchini seeds outfitted with virus genes announced that they would refuse to sell seed packets in Vermont, since the state legislature requires GM seeds to be labeled.

Shopping Guide helps you avoid GMOs

Where does that leave you—if you happen to be one of those finicky eaters who values your immune and reproductive systems, and don’t want your kids to end up with the organ damage common among GMO-fed lab animals? Fortunately, we’ve got you covered. Go to www.NonGMOShoppingGuide.com and peruse the long lists of non-GMO and GMO brands by category. Download a two-page version, order the pocket guide, or even equip your iPhone with the new app “ShopNoGMO”.

Although a list of non-GMO brands won’t help you figure out if your produce is genetically modified, the great news is that there are only 4 GMO veggies or fruits at this point: papaya, but only from Hawaii and no where else; some zucchini and yellow squash, and some corn on the cob. For these, unless it says organic or boasts a non-GMO sign in the store, eating them is a gamble. It could be GMO.

If you’re not sure if GMOs are bad for you, we’ve got you covered there too. Visit www.HealthierEating.org, and read, listen, or watch, and find out why more and more doctors and medical organizations are prescribing non-GMO diets to all patients.

Vaccines & Blue Foot Syndrome

Where’s the proof? More research! Inconclusive! Vaccines don’t cause autism, that’s a kooky theory. Yet who would vaccinate if there was ANY doubt? Each year that the outcry gets ignored is one more year millions of kids are forced to take a chance. Autism aside, many will become ill with chronic disease, allergies, and a weak immune system. Dr, Sherri Tenpenny vents her frustration with the lack of rationale using an analogy called “Blue Foot Syndrome.”

The analogy below may sound absurd, but it begs the question, how much proof is needed? Over 400 peer reviewed articles, documented evidence, increasing illnesses after vaccinations, thousands of parent testimonies, even Washington knows about it – is that enough? Obviously, proof of harm from vaccines is not going to stop the insanity. It’s time to turn the tables on that ilk and ask in return: “Where’s YOUR proof that they DON’T cause harm??”

~Health Freedoms

I grow weary of people who continually want “proof” that vaccines cause harm and can cause autism. Every year the insistence for “More research!! More research!” goes by, four million more children born each year are lined up to be injected with dozens of doses of 16 different vaccines. Many of these precious bundles will become chronically ill; some will become statistics.

Webster defines proof as “something that induces certainty or establishes validity.” What level of “proof” yet needs to be demonstrated that will be described as definitive confirmation? Video of children the day before, and then the day after, vaccines have documented autistic regression; the recordings are even admissible in Court as evidence. Is that enough “proof”? Heart wrenching stories about side effects after vaccines – high pitched screaming, vomiting, seizures and even death – have been told by the thousands of parents. Is that proof, or all they all liars?

By now, identifying vaccine injury should be obvious. But instead, it is much like the story of a child who dropped a large frozen turkey on his foot…

Within hours, his foot became bright blue. His parents, concerned because the child cried inconsolably and refused to walk, quickly sought medical help.

The doctor examined the young lad’s foot and said, “Hmmmm…. I see he is experiencing Blue Foot Syndrome. We don’t know what causes it but we are seeing more and more children with this condition in the last few years.”

The parents retort, “But Doctor – he started screaming and lost his ability to walk within a few hours after a frozen turkey landed on his foot.”

“Tisk, tisk,” says the doctor. “We have proven that frozen turkeys have no link to Blue Foot Syndrome. In a study of more than 4 million kids, the number who developed a blue foot after being struck by a frozen turkey was statistically insignificant. We have determined something else must be causing Blue Foot Syndrome.”

With that, thousands of dollars of medical tests were conducted to find any possible reason for the boy’s blue foot. Even though medical science had no explanation for the problem, doctors were certain the thump by a frozen turkey was absolutely not the cause.

Sadly, the doctor informed the parents no reason for their child’s Blue Foot Syndrome was found. He affirmed the condition shows up randomly and was slightly more common in those with susceptible blood vessels. In fact, since 1 in 87 now seem to have this random Blue Foot Syndrome, and research is underway to find a defective gene to blame.

The devastated parents, terrified they may have a defective gene causing their child’s pain and loss of ambulation, asked, “But doctor, there must be something we can do to help him walk and stop being in pain!”

Leaning back in his chair, the doctor pontificated, “Today, many therapists specialize in Blue Foot Syndrome. Colleges are even offering courses to become experts in this anomaly. I’m sure you can find a number of treatments that may help eliminate his pain, but there is no cure. A word of caution: Never use Blue Foot Syndrome on your insurance forms. You can use “painful foot” or “discolored appendage” or “abnormal ability to walk” but never use Blue Foot Syndrome or your insurance will deny payment of all your medical bills.”

As silly as this story may sound to some, it is the tale of vaccine injury and the long list of sensory integration disorders, language abnormalities, and yes, even autism.

More than 400 articles, published in peer-reviewed literature, document vaccines can cause harm – including allergies, autoimmune disease and a long list of neurological disturbances. Is that “proof” enough?

The newly released report by EBCALA [1] and PACE Environmental is amazing and 65 pages worth reading. [2] The press conference [3] in Washington DC on May 10, 2011 presented documents that confirmed vaccines can cause autism, and exposed a government cover up that deserves a congressional investigation. It appears this isn’t enough “proof” either?

The vaccine industry, the government and the medical mafia need to be put on the defensive. Where is *their proof* that vaccines do NOT cause autism? Every study they tout has “proof” of no connection has been a large epidemiological assessment, research that has little bearing on the individual. And every one of their “cornerstone studies” has been proven to be flawed and some are even fraudulent.

That should be “proof” enough for the whole world that the time has come to Just Say No to vaccines.[4]
